How to get into Google in 7 days

A step-by-step plan for a new website: what to check, which free services to connect and how to tell that everything worked. No promises of “first place”, only what can really be done in a week.

In short

  • In a week it is realistic to have Google find and index your important pages. High rankings are the next stage and take months.
  • The main tools are free: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Most often a site stays out of the index because of small technical issues: a block in robots.txt, a noindex meta tag or canonical errors.

Indexing and rankings are not the same thing

Indexing means Google has found a page and saved it in its database. Only then can the page appear in search. Ranking is the page’s position in the results for a specific query. It depends on content, usability, speed, links and competition.

So the honest goal for 7 days is to get all important pages into the index. Steady ranking growth usually starts after 1–3 months.

Day 1. Technical check

  • robots.txt does not block indexing: there is no Disallow: / line for all robots;
  • pages have no noindex meta tag. It is often forgotten after the staging version;
  • every page has a correct canonical pointing to itself;
  • the site opens over HTTPS, and addresses with and without www lead to one version;
  • there is a sitemap.xml listing all important pages.

Day 2. Google Search Console

Search Console is a free Google service that shows how the search engine sees your site: which pages are indexed, which queries people find you by and what errors there are.

  1. Add a domain property and verify it with a DNS TXT record. This way the reports cover all versions of the site at once.
  2. Submit your sitemap.xml address in the “Sitemaps” section.
  3. Give your developer access through users and permissions settings, not with your own password.

Day 3. Request indexing of key pages

Enter the page address in the URL inspection bar at the top of Search Console and request indexing. Start with the home page, service pages and contacts. The number of such requests per day is limited, so don’t spend them on secondary pages: Google will find the rest through the sitemap and links.

Day 4. Bing and IndexNow

Bing Webmaster Tools takes a couple of minutes to connect by importing data from Search Console. Bing matters not only on its own: other search services partly rely on its data too.

IndexNow is a protocol that lets your site notify search engines about new and changed pages itself. It is supported by Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and others. Google does not use IndexNow, so for Google you rely on Search Console and the sitemap.

Day 5. Google Business Profile and directories

For a local business, Google Business Profile is as important as the website: it appears on maps and in the local business block of search results. Fill in categories, services and opening hours, add photos of your work and a link to the site.

Check your company listings in Estonian directories: 1182.ee, Inforegister, Teatmik. Links from them help Google find the site faster and confirm that the business is real.

Day 6. Internal links and languages

  • Every important page should be linked from the menu or other pages. Pages without incoming links are found and indexed worse.
  • Every page has its own title and description, with no duplicates.
  • If the site is multilingual, set up hreflang so the Estonian version shows in Estonian search and the Russian or English one for people searching in those languages.

Day 7. Check the result

Open the page indexing report in Search Console. It shows which pages are already indexed, which are not and why. A quick check is a site:your-site.ee search in Google, but precise data is only in Search Console.

ReasonWhat it meansWhat to do
Discovered, currently not indexedGoogle knows about the page but hasn’t crawled it yetWait, add internal links, check server speed
Crawled, currently not indexedGoogle looked at the page and decided not to add it for nowMake the content more useful and unique, remove duplicates

What comes next

Indexing is the foundation. Then SEO begins: content written around customer queries, separate pages for services and districts, speed, reviews and links. First results usually come in 1–3 months, steady growth in 4–6 months.

We can do it for you. We connect Search Console and Bing, set up the sitemap, IndexNow and hreflang, fix errors and send a report on which pages are indexed. Read more about indexing and SEO.
